Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 (Last Day) The last day was filled with mixed emotions. The children were still recovering from special Christmas. They enjoyed the party and their gift bags. Their whole outlook has changed. When we first came they were wearing torn clothing and some looked unkept. Now, the children look more polished and are upbeat. We are all amazed by their transformation. We chuckled because we had picked up at least 15 extra children off the street in our VBS program.
On the last day, the children were very eager to learn. They listened and hung onto each word we said. The story of Queen Esther took on a special meaning for these orphans. We emphasized that God had a special plan for each one of them. If they give their hearts to Him, as Esther did, they may also find themselves in high places. We told each child to dream big. They don’t have to remain in poverty. We let them know that if they studied hard, they can accomplish their goals.
After we handed out special certificates and small loaves of bread, we all made our way to our van. We were swarmed by our new friends. Each child came to hug us and shake our hands. They had a little special spark in their eyes as they gave us a special “thank you” smile. We were moved. These children were our children for five days. We taught, fed and clothed them. Most of all, we provided a security blanket. Now, that blanket will be pulled away from them. We were sad to leave.
We ended this chapter of our trip with a great satfisfaction. God fulfilled His mission through us irregardless of our shortcomings and the little annoyances we faced. We are peaceful in the assurance that our Divine Shepard will take care of these lovely sweet children.
