Today was a very busy day both at the Orphanage and throughout Lusaka. We had a smooth program. Both the NAPS volunteers and other participants seemed to enjoy the day. The favorite highlights of the day were: getting a picture of the five toddlers that Grace Fellowship SDA Children’s department sponsored; teaching the children to pray with each other and playing baseball outside.
Getting a picture of the five little girls was a high priority to us. While we have been blessed with many donors, we were especially touched by eight young people at the Grace Fellowship church. For three months they raised enough money to provide Christmas gifts for five little girls shown in the picture on the right. Here are some of the errands that the Grace Fellowship kids did to raise money: wash dishes, take out trash, water garden, babysit, clean room, wash car, vacuum, emptied dishwasher, polished Dad’s shoes, bathed dog, swiffered floors, and etc..
We have been emphasizing prayer as an important tool. We are hoping that the children will exercise this option throughout the lives freely. It was very touching to see the children comfortably get into prayer circles.
I thought it was so cool for the children to bat as Mark pitched to them. They also got to run to first base. The school compound is not very big. So, this is a big accomplishment (LOL!!). Some girls batted like Barry Bonds without the steroids. We left the school on a very high note. The children surrounded our van and reminded us not to forget about Christmas.
Little did we realize that Christmas Eve rush is universal. Zambians were let out early today. There were a lot of hustling and bustling at shops, bank ATMs, and restaurants. Against this backdrop, the Salvation Army was playing the very familiar tunes of “Joy to the World.” I had to chuckle for a minute. We thought that we made the great escape out of commercialism to Zambia to get reprieve from Christmas. Boy! Were we wrong! Christmas means a lot to the locals. I’m glad that we survived the craziness of the Holiday shopping. We upped our Christmas gift bags to the orphans from 72 to 85. We filled the bags with donated clothes, goodies, and Bibles. We also purchased a large quantity of bread loaves to divide among the children. We are excited that we will finally distribute the gifts to the anxious kids.
