Tuesday, 18 December 2007 Hey everyone!
Sorry for not blogging for the last two days. We just arrived in Lusaka, Zambia around noon. Our trip was extra long because we got bargain airline tickets. We’ve been en route for the last 36 hours (Nashville, Chicago, London, Kenya, Zambia). We've been through four time zones! (Central, London, Kenyan, Zambian)...We look the part. We ended up paying TWICE for our excess luggage since we had to check-in again with another carrier in London. You maybe wondering why. We had two different non-partnered airline carriers. Just picture us trudging across terminals via underground train in London with twelve, irregular sized baggage. Whew! Somehow, with God’s strength we made it through this adventure.. We are determined to not let this bend in the road to take us down. We enjoyed seeing and hearing people from all over the world. Mark remarked that we were not in Iowa anymore, at Heathrow airport…We met nice folks from Dallas and New Jersey who were seasoned Afrikkan travelers. In fact, one of them was on his way to Mount Kilamajaro, Tanzania to make a climb. This mountain is Africa’s highest peak mountain.
Once we met up and received a very warm welcome from my sister and the NAPs-Zambia members, our travel experience took a back seat. My sister set us up very well. She is always a gracious hostess. For a moment in time, we could not tell if were in Birmingham or Lusaka. NAPs assisted us with customs and also helped us get oriented in Lusaka. We were so impressed with their sincerity. They are young people with a big heart.
It has been nine years since I was last on this intriguing continent. The basic airport, the smell of sweat, the round-abouts, the dirt roads, the special hand shakes, the women carrying big loads of goods on their heads were all coming back to me. Mark was also soaking it all in, through his tired eyes. It has been raining excessively. The lush greenery all around arrests our eyes. Yes, I kept wincing at the perception of our taxi having many close calls on the road. They drive on the wrong side of the road (lol!!!)
On one of our errand stops, we met a blind youth who was begging for some money. We were encouraged not to give money but rather food. We handed the young lad, part of our lunch. There are some interesting chain stores here: Subway Sandwich shop, Pizza Inn, Blockbusters, and even local version of Target store.
Since we are extremely sleep deprived, we decided to meet with NAPS tomorrow for our planning session. We also plan to visit the orphanage tomorrow. We are anxious to get our mission started.
There is some good news today! We have wireless internet service at our guest house. So, look forward to our blog. We may publish a blog by 4:00pm, your time since we are 8 hours ahead. Keep us in prayers, as we wait for two of our blue tubs. I need to sign-off from my mosquito net tent, for now. Nellie :)
