Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 Zambia Blog "The journey is the reward." (Chinease Proverb)Wow! You may be wondering how this mission trip to Zambia got started. My younger sister is in Zambia doing medical research. Mark and I wanted to visit her over the Christmas holidays. To occupy ourselves while she is at work, we decided to tackle a short-term project. One of the ideas that came to our mind was a Vacation Bible School. With the help of NAPS (The National Association for the Prevention of Starvation) in Zambia, we signed on to conduct a VBS at Kyeye Home Foundation, on the outskirts of Lusaka. The Kyeye Home is a day school facility for 72 AIDS orphans who range from ages 4-17. The goal of our Vacation Bible School is to bring hope to these young people. We will cover lessons on Bible heroes as Noah, Daniel, Esther and Baby Jesus with them. Not only will we provide lessons, crafts, and health lesson daily, we will conclude our program each day with a simple lunch. We will also hand-out clothing to the children. With these goals in mind, we have been immersed in preparation. We thought that this project would be small. We have prayed about our project, and have mentioned it to a few of our families, church and work contacts.... Since then, our project has mushroomed to more than twenty-five donors from six different states (Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas). Three churches have actively campaigned for donations on our behalf. Mark and I can not believe this miracle, considering that we started our planning only four weeks ago. We are excited and passionate about this door that God has opened for us. When we look at the pictures of the sweet, smiling children in this home, we feel it is an honor to serve them. If for a moment we can make a difference, we hope that it could be a turning point in their turbulent lives. Because of the wonderful support and enthusiasm shown by all of you, we will ATTEMPT to blog from Zambia. We can't promise that it will happen daily but we will give it a try. Since this crazy idea worked from 10,000 feet up in the Andes mountain last year on our Maranatha mission trip, it's gotta to work in Zambia. Last year, I had trouble with @ key in Peru. We are doing well as long as we don't have trouble with the letter Z....(LOL!!!!) We will try to provide a summary and interesting pictures (if God and bandwidth permits). My husband is a man of few words. So, his contribution will be pictures. Stick with us over the Xmas holidays. This blog will be neat. You get to evaluate my mental state after smelling like deet, and being deprived of pizza, warm showers, and working toilets. I will also caution you that this blog will be devotional and introspective at times, given that we are using our church website. Our faith is very important to us. Join us in this special journey as the Lord leads us to the beautiful country of Zambia! I am not color-blind for those of you who question my color choices in the directory page. Those colors represent the different colors in the Zambian flag. Red represents the struggle for freedom; black, the people of Zambia; orange, the country's mineral wealth; and green, the natural resources...
